Traditional Scottish pub Inverness

"The Castle Tavern" in Inverness, Scotland, is a traditional pub known for its idyllic location and historic charm. It is situated directly opposite the impressive Inverness Castle and offers a picturesque view of the River Ness, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. The building itself dates back to the mid-18th century and retains its original character—from the rustic façade to the cozy interiors spread over four floors. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, characterized by dark wood, traditional decor, and a relaxed pub culture. Particularly noteworthy is the beer garden, which provides a stunning view of the city and river on sunny days, making it perfect for a leisurely meal or a drink. The restaurant on the first floor complements the offerings and encourages longer stays.

Culinary-wise, "The Castle Tavern" stands for fresh, locally sourced ingredients and a cuisine that combines Scottish classics with a touch of sophistication. A highlight is the "Cullen Skink," a creamy soup made from smoked haddock, potatoes, and onions, impressing with its rich texture and deep flavor. Meat lovers appreciate the "Steak Pie," a hearty pastry filled with tender beef in a savory sauce, all wrapped in a crispy crust. For fish fans, "Fish and Chips" is a must—freshly caught haddock, battered and deep-fried to a golden brown, served with thick chips that elevate the dish to an experience. Vegetarian options like the "Mushroom and Spinach Wellington" provide a flavorful alternative with juicy mushrooms and creamy spinach enveloped in puff pastry. For dessert, the "Sticky Toffee Pudding" tempts with its sweet, caramel indulgence topped with warm sauce that pairs perfectly with a dollop of cream.

The beverage selection is another pride of the house. "The Castle Tavern" is known for its impressive range of real ales, which change regularly and often come from local breweries. The "Malt of the Month" is particularly appreciated, showcasing the diversity of Scottish distilleries—a highlight for whisky lovers. The wine list is thoughtfully curated, offering options that complement the dishes perfectly. For those seeking something lighter, there is also a selection of draft beers and refreshing non-alcoholic drinks. The pub also attracts hikers who have completed the Great Glen Way, rewarding them with a certificate and a warm atmosphere to relax in.

Warm atmosphere in the pub

The service at "The Castle Tavern" is often described as warm and friendly. The staff takes care to create a family-like atmosphere and is always ready to offer recommendations—whether for a beer or a dish. On busy days, such as during the summer months or at festivals, it can get crowded, but the staff keeps everything running smoothly, ensuring guests are well taken care of. A particular eye-catcher is the life-sized fiberglass statue of Johnnie Walker that stands outside, often attracting more photos than the castle itself—a little anecdote that adds character to the pub.
